May Meeting Minutes
Shuswap Spinners and Weavers
May 2, 2016
The meeting was called to order at 7:07 by Carole, with 24 members, and one guest, Sherry Exton attending.
Louise moved that the Minutes of the April Meeting be adopted. Glenda seconded. CARRIED
Sharon said that Darcy was in VJH, and asked that a card of sympathy be sent to Mona and Darcy.
Equipment: Rod has tweaked another spinning wheel. He is currently reading the instruction booket for the sock machine, in the hopes of getting it going for the Wednesday Evening spin-in Crew. We could knit a sock in 8 1/2 minutes!!!
Library: Bea Reported that there are a few outstanding books.
Workshops: Louise reported that she had heard of an interest in dyeing, and perhaps dyeing workshops. She suggested options of a) Random Dyeing (current specialists: Lois, Sara, Ky), Precision Dyeing (Louise) and Painted Warp Dyeing (Sharon) Sign up sheets were set out for members who might be interested in these options. Other options might consist of a study group on dyeing, or perhaps a guild fun day for dye events. If you were not present at the meeting, you could email Lis with options that particularly interested you, and a tabulated list could be passed on to Louise for organization.
Louise also suggested that perhaps in the fall she could offer a workshop in reading drafts (weaving patterns) as the drafts look quite different when presented in different books. Louise put out a sign out sheet, but you can contact her if you are also interested in such a workshop.
On May 7, Gudie is offering an art/novelty yarn workshop in Vernon, through "A Twist of Yarn." Cost is $30, supplies are not provided, and there are still a couple of spaces left. If you are interested, you can apply at info@atwistofyarn.com
OLD BUSINESS
Sheep to Shawl - disposal of shawls after the fair. After some discussion about the possibilities, Rosalie moved and Glenda seconded
That the shawls for the Sheep to Shawl competition should be distributed by a draw of the members from the Sheep to Shawl Team. CARRIED
Blanket Project: Ann showed a possible model for the next blanket and showed the colours chosen for the warp. The basically neutral coloured warp allows for a variety of weft choices, which should allow for very differently appearing blankets. For the weft, 4 skeins of wool would be needed, which can be purchase in whatever colour chosen, from Sharon at a price of $6.00 a skein. Weavers preferring to use wool from their own stash are warned to use one brand of wool for the entire weft. Blanket weavers have been emailed with information.
Sally Scarecrow: This Friday, May 6 is the final work party date for Sally. If you are interested in helping, come to Lois' barn on Friday from 10 - 2 PM. Bring a lunch, and working utensils.
OCT 29 Spin Out - Door prizes are being collected now, and held in the guild room. Be sure to give items that you would be happy to go home with.
NEW BUSINESS
The Display window at Piccadilly Mall has been redecorated by Elvi with rugs. Be sure to view it. Elvi reported that the Piccadilly Mall no longer wishes to keep the Salute to the Salmon Display, or the case it is displayed in. This is a lovely resource, and could be placed in many venues - Kelowna Airport, Quaaot Lodge perhaps. WE need a Salesperson who could take on the job of seeing that the case and its salmon are placed in a good new home, preferably for a good price. Please talk to Elvi if you are the person for this job.
Nominating Committee: Bea reported that the only position which needs to be filled for the election is Secretary, as the other positions will be filled by incumbents. Nominees will be needed by the June meeting.
Ann made a book report on the publications of the Guild of Canadian Weavers, which are stored on the wall behind the big loom. These publications come complete with instructions, colour suggestions, and samples. Some samples being produced for this publication are now on the loom in the guild room. Members are invited to weave on the loom. Ann reports that the pattern is easily followed, and that one pattern can be woven in 15 minutes.
A gift of wool was distributed to the members, which had been donated by Thomas Preston. Members who took the donations were encouraged to sign the Thank you Card.
Venue for Spring Potluck. It was decided to hold the June 6 Potluck in the same meeting room. Members are encouraged to bring plates and utensils, as well as salads, casseroles and desserts. Memberships will be due at this meeting.
